Psychic Cold Reading

Psychic cold reading is a series of techniques employed by illusionists, mentalists, psychics, mediums, fortune tellers to determine and gather information and details about another person. They use this to convince their audience that they know more about a subject because they have extra sensory perception or they have the paranormal talent to decipher a person’s aura.

Psychic cold reading is a procedure wherein a client or an audience reveals their personality and problems through the psychic’s capability of persuasion. The medium can get the minute details through a person’s body language, clothing, and mannerisms. They would employ high probability guesses about the subject and they would try to pick up on the subject’s reactions to determine if their guess hits a spot or they are grappling at straws.

Different types of techniques are employed when it comes to psychic cold reading. The first type involves delivery of a prepared spiel. The latest surveys and polls would help distinguish the stereotypes in the audience and thus they are the segmented market of the spiel. By using the data and theatrics, they persuade the audience that information is gathered through paranormal ways.

The second technique is the shot gun approach where the medium would ask a lot of questions rapidly hoping to invoke a reaction from the audience. The medium would just keenly observed the reactions from the audience and he can pinpoint who is mostly affected by his questions. He would just refine his questions to suit the subject. The method called when making a personal connection through a series of questions asked by the medium is the Forer Effect. This technique, on the other hand relies on so called Barnum Statements, they are statements that seem personal yet it applies to many.

Psychic cold reading has been around way before, even during the time of the great Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes literature. It may sound like voodoo or black magic but all it takes it just keen observation and careful analysis.
